How to Combine a CV, Cover Letter and Certificates into One PDF

Many application portals ask for one attachment even when your application contains several documents. Combining them into one organized PDF makes the package easier to upload, review and archive.

Choose a professional document order

A common sequence is cover letter first, CV or résumé second, then certificates, transcripts and other supporting evidence. The exact order should follow the employer or portal instructions when they specify one.

Put the strongest and most immediately relevant material near the front so a reviewer does not need to search through supporting pages.

Convert source documents to PDF first

If the CV or cover letter is still a Word document, convert it to PDF before merging. This locks in the intended page appearance and prevents unexpected font or spacing differences during review.

Photographed certificates should be cropped and converted into properly oriented PDF pages rather than inserted as oversized phone images.

Merge and review the final package

Arrange the files in the correct sequence, merge them, then open the resulting PDF from beginning to end. Check that no blank pages, duplicate certificates or upside-down scans were introduced.

Use a clear filename such as Firstname-Lastname-Application.pdf rather than generic names like document-final2.pdf.

  • Follow the employer’s requested order when provided.
  • Use consistent page orientation.
  • Remove duplicate and blank pages.
  • Use a professional final filename.
  • Check the portal upload-size limit before submission.

Compress only when necessary

If the combined application exceeds the portal limit, compress the finished PDF. Avoid unnecessary heavy compression when certificates contain small text, seals or signatures.

Keep the high-quality original package and use the compressed version only for submission when required.

Final checklist for your merged application

Open the finished file in a PDF viewer and inspect every transition between your cover letter, CV and certificates. Check orientation, blank pages, font layout and whether stamps and seals remain readable.

Follow the receiving employer’s requested order and size limit. If you compress the result, check it again for readability. Keep the original high-quality application package for your records.
